Cosmetic Dentistry: Providing More than Just a Beautiful Smile

Portrait of young cheerful smiling woman, over gray background

Too often, cosmetic treatments are thought of as strictly aesthetic procedures typically reserved for the rich and famous. Many people think that this type of restoration gives little to no value to a smile beyond visual appeal. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

While it’s true that cosmetic dental care does revolve around a primary focus of enhancing dental aesthetics, many of these treatments also provide a large number of functional and oral health improvements, allowing you to enjoy overall renewed oral health as well as a beautiful smile.

Before our team can recommend an aesthetic plan to help you achieve the smile of your dreams, a strong foundation of optimal oral health must first be established. Healthy teeth, gums, and other important structures that are free of decay or infection, lay down the foundation for true cosmetic results to remain as beautiful as they are long-lasting.

What Cosmetic Dental Services Do We Offer?

Determining the Right Cosmetic Procedures for You

The first step towards achieving your ideal smile is to evaluate your current oral health and identify the issues you want to address. Our smile analysis process includes a complete oral examination in which we determine the health of your teeth, gums, and other important soft tissues of your mouth.

Our practice prefers a conservative approach to cosmetic treatment, enhancing your smile's natural beauty. With an array of innovative procedures such as Smile Design, Dr. Leizerovich will work with you to revamp, repair, and restore your smile to its optimal beauty and health.

Understanding the Importance of Digital Smile Design

concept image of tooth with polygon wireframe

Digital Smile Design is becoming increasingly important as the aesthetically-conscious dental patient base increases. Now more than ever, patients are looking to achieve more natural looking outcomes that highlight their unique facial features and skin tone as well as complimenting their age.

With Smile Design, all this can be achieved through slight alternations to the teeth, like enhancing the natural translucency or shade of your natural teeth.

Digital Smile Design is crucial as it allows us to show you a precise image of your proposed smile, which allows you to confirm and approve results before any preparation begins.

With this truly advanced approach to creating the dental appeal you’ve always wanted, you have essential peace of mind, knowing exactly what your smile will look like before any treatment is rendered.

The Smile Design Process Explained

The process of Digital Smile Design begins with extensive reviews of your:

  • Facial features & aesthetics
  • Facial symmetry
  • Dental and facial positions
  • The relation of your dental aesthetics to the facial aesthetics
  • The harmony and balance of your gums

We take a series of digital images, both with intra-oral and extra-oral cameras, as well as upper and lower dental scans or impressions.

We may also take a live video recording of the way you talk so that we can see the lips in motion during different emotional expressions, as well as in a natural smile, which is often much more intricate than a posed smile.

I Want to Whiten My Smile Professionally. What are My Options?

At Elite Dentistry we are happy to provide two safe, effective, and convenient methods for whitening your smile. We offer in house whitening where our team does all the work, and in less than two hours you leave the office with a whiter smile, or if you prefer to whiten at home at your own pace, we offer customized take-home teeth whitening kits.

If you choose our in house option, our assistants will prep your teeth and apply specialized material to protect your gums from the whitening gel. They will then apply the concentrated whitening gel to the teeth and allow that to sit under a special light to enhance the process. You will usually repeat those steps 3 to 4 times depending on your progress and your comfort level. Whitening usually takes around 90 minutes. We will also make take home trays and provide those to you with your service. With the take home trays you will be able to touch up your whitening at home as needed.

If you prefer to whiten at home, customized trays are created by our dentist, and will come with a specialty-grade whitening gel that you can wear for an hour or two during the day. The amount of time worn will vary per patient depending on comfort and sensitivity experienced. Our experienced team will guide you in finding the right fit for your individual needs as well as your desired results.

Although these trays contain higher doses of hydrogen peroxide, they are administered in a way that is entirely safe as long as you comply with treatment instructions.

What Does Take-Home Teeth Whitening Involve?

Usually two visits are required for this type of teeth whitening. Impressions are made from your teeth at the first appointment to create your custom trays.

Your second appointment will consist of Dr. Leizerovich adjusting your trays to ensure they fit perfectly and comfortably on your teeth. Depending on the severity of your tooth discoloration as well as your desired level of brightness, we recommend the trays be worn with the special whitening solution once or  twice a day for 30 to 60 minutes for a few weeks.

You will receive instructions on how to properly use your trays for safe and effective at-home whitening. We will also recommend you stay diligent with visiting us for your bi-annual cleanings and examinations to help keep your smile beautiful, healthy, and white.

Am I a Good Candidate for Professional Teeth Whitening?

Those who can benefit well from professional teeth whitening should have these five important factors:

  1. Healthy teeth
  2. Free of gum disease
  3. Willingness to maintain a strong oral health routine
  4. Have mild to moderate discolored or yellow teeth
  5. Want to enhance the look of their smile

Will Teeth Whitening Affect Any of my Fillings, Veneers, or Crowns?

Teeth whitening will have little or no effect on any current crowns, fillings, or veneers you may have. These restorations do not usually stain or whiten.

Can Composite Fillings or Veneers Enhance my Smile?

Composite fillings are designed to blend seamlessly with your natural enamel when repairing and shaping your teeth. When using composite materials, our dentist can create a filling that is customized to the exact shade of your teeth, making treatment indistinguishable from the rest of your smile.

Fillings protect your teeth after decay to prevent breakage of the remaining structure of the tooth. These tooth-colored fillings also help to prevent sensitivity after removing the decayed tooth portion.

White fillings won't compromise your beautiful smile. Another advantage of composite fillings is that they require less removal of healthy tooth structure, allowing you to keep more of your natural smile.

How Can I Make My Composite Fillings Last?

Fillings can traditionally last about ten years or so. But if you take great care of your smile, your fillings can last longer!

In order to ensure that your fillings last, you should continue to see your dentist twice a year for regular dental cleanings and examinations, brush your teeth twice a day, floss every day, and eat a variety of healthy foods to help boost your oral health.

What if I Have Multiple Smile Imperfections I Want Addressed at the Same Time?

If you have a more involved cosmetic or esthetic concern, Veneers  might be a better option for you. Made of the highest-quality porcelain, veneers are thin yet durable shells that are used to cover the surface of your teeth to help provide overall smile uniformity and natural-looking aesthetics without removing good tooth structure.

Veneers can improve a wide variety of cosmetic dental problems such as:

  • Severely stained and discolored teeth
  • Mild misalignment
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Worn or misshaped teeth
  • Gaps
  • Crooked or uneven teeth

Do Veneers Ruin Teeth?

As long as your veneer treatment is performed by an experienced and highly-trained cosmetic dentist like Dr. Leizerovich, veneers will not ruin your teeth. However, to prepare your smile for veneer placement, we will need to smooth out the surface of your enamel.

I Have Missing Teeth, Can Cosmetic Dentistry Help Me?

You may be surprised to discover that cosmetic dental care doesn’t just help you whiten your teeth. Aesthetically-focused treatments can also rejuvenate smiles with one or more missing teeth as a result of prior injury, decay, hereditary factors, or serve gum disease.

When you have a smile affected by missing teeth, we provide the following treatments to rejuvenate your teeth to their optimal health, function and beauty:

Porcelain or Zirconia Crowns- In additional to completely replacing a single missing tooth, we use high-quality porcelain or zirconia crowns to improve your smile’s overall appearance and shape.

Crowns supported by dental implants provide visual appeal as well as delivering a strong functional foundation. Our crowns are matched to the exact color of your natural teeth.

Bridges- These are commonly used to replace one or more missing teeth when Implants are not a good option. Bridges fill the spaces where teeth are missing. These prosthetics can either be cemented to natural teeth as a supportive anchor, or affixed to implants for long-lasting support.

Dentures and Partials- These aesthetically-pleasing prosthetics can be removable or affixed to dental implants to ensure long-lasting stability. Full or complete dentures are ideal for replacing a smile that have few or no teeth remaining.

Partial dentures are made of pink acrylic that mimics natural gums, with natural looking prosthetic teeth attached to replace one or more  missing teeth within your smile.

Dental Implants- Considered as the gold standard for full tooth replacement, implants provide numerous benefits in addition to restoring lost teeth. These posts serve as artificial tooth roots and fuse naturally with living tissue and bone. The implant is surgically inserted into the jawbone and is one of the longest lasting restorations in the dental industry. Once fused and healed, dental implants act as a highly-reliable and successful foundation for your crown, bridge, partial, or full denture. Implants are usually the best option for missing teeth, but can only be used if the bone level and depth is sufficient or can be restored with bone grafting. Your dental team with evaluate your individual situation to determine the best treatment plan for you.
