Dental Implants, the Popular Choice for Restoring a Youthful Smile

mature mother and adult daughter smilingIf you have damaged or missing teeth that need replacement, a dental implant is one of the best options to save your smile. Considered to be the gold standard for full tooth replacement, an implant restores a missing tooth from root to crown. Not only does it look natural, but it also provides stimulation to your jawbone, helping you maintain your youthful facial structure.

With a dental implant, you are the closest you can get to healthy natural teeth. They also function exactly like your own teeth, allowing you to smile, talk, and eat confidently. Whether dental implants are the right option for you or not, Igal Leizerovich, DDS and his professional team at Elite Dentistry are here to serve your dental needs and offer a range of restorative treatment options, including root canal therapy and full & partial dentures.

How Does a Dental Implant Work?

Dental implants are metal posts used to serve as the roots of missing teeth through surgical placement in the jawbone. A crown, denture, or bridge is then fixed to these new artificial teeth roots to replace your missing teeth.

What Is a Dental Implant Made Of?

The implant post is made of titanium. The great benefit of using titanium is that it is a biocompatible material that fuses with your jawbone, and replaces your teeth roots permanently. The titanium also doesn’t decay like your own teeth, giving you a lifetime of healthy teeth roots.

Are Dental Implants Right for Me?

You may be an ideal dental implant candidate if you:

  • Are at an age where your jawbones are fully developed
  • Have adequate bone density to secure the implants or able to have a bone grafting procedure
  • Have no health conditions that affect bone healing
  • Have healthy gums free of periodontal disease
  • Are looking to improve your speech by getting rid of the gaps between your teeth

Are Dental Implants Safe?

Implant procedures have been performed for over fifty years. They are known to be safe and extremely successful, especially when performed by a qualified professional like Dr. Leizerovich and his skilled team of dental professionals.

How Long Does an Implant Procedure Take?

This procedure typically takes several months to complete. Based on your oral health and the type and number of implants you are getting, Dr. Leizerovich will let you know how long it should take for you to get your new set of worry-free teeth.

What is Implant Surgery Like?

As mentioned above, the steps of this procedure and their duration vary from one patient to another. Since bone healing around the inserted implant is of crucial importance for the success of the procedure, we allow our patients all the time they need for their jawbones to heal.

Step 1: The Treatment Plan

Once Dr. Leizerovich determines that you are a good candidate for implants, he will discuss your options, including needed restorations and how many implants you need. Then he will build a treatment plan that meets your needs.

  • A single tooth is replaced by one implant and a crown.
  • Several teeth are replaced using implant-supported bridges.
  • For a full arch, an implant-supported full denture can replace all teeth.

Dr. Leizerovich will check the areas where teeth are missing to make sure that you have adequate bone to secure the implant placement. If your jawbone doesn’t have enough strength or is too soft, bone grafting will be needed.

Bone grafting is a procedure where new material is added to your jaw to strengthen it. A bone graft may use your own transplanted bone or synthetic material designed specifically for grafting.

If you undergo any procedures to prep your bone, we will allow you enough time for your jawbone to heal. The next step in the process will be inserting the titanium implant post into the jaw bone to serve as a strong base for your new teeth.

Before we proceed with the next steps, we will allow enough time for your jaw to heal. You will receive temporary restorations to use during this healing process.

Our dentists will ensure your jaw has healed well enough to proceed with placing the abutment into the implant post. An abutment is a piece that screws into the dental implant, to which the artificial tooth will attach later. This procedure is minor, and most of the time is done with only local anesthesia.

During this final step, we use impressions of your mouth to create your new teeth. These replacement teeth complete the full implant and give you a new set of permanent teeth that look exactly like your natural teeth.

What Can I Expect After Receiving a Dental Implant?

Throughout the procedure and after it is complete, you will continuously receive care instructions that suit your needs and lifestyle. Our dental staff will work with you to schedule periodic follow-up visits to monitor the health of your implant, teeth, and gums.
